Most horoscopes are written for a sun sign — a twelfth of the population, give or take. Ephemera gives you something different: a reading built from your specific birth data, against your actual planetary positions on the day, time, and place you were born.
The positions are computed, not looked up. The interpretation is literary. The result is yours.
Real positions, not approximations.
When you submit a birth date, time, and place, Ephemera resolves your birth city to a precise geographic latitude, longitude, and local timezone — the same coordinates professional chart software uses. Your local birth time is then placed against those coordinates to arrive at an exact universal moment.
From that moment, the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets are calculated individually — not drawn from a table of date ranges or approximated by birth month. Each position is specific to that day, that hour, that place.
Sun and Moon positions are reliable from a birth date alone. The Sun moves slowly enough that the sign holds across any reasonable birth window; the Moon moves quickly but stays within a sign for two to three days. The Rising sign is different — it advances roughly one degree every four minutes, completing a full circuit of the zodiac in a day. Without an exact birth time and location, it cannot be computed honestly. Ephemera leaves it blank rather than guess.
Three positions, three different questions.
The Sun's sign is where the Sun was in the zodiac at the moment of your birth. It moves through all twelve signs over the course of a year — roughly one sign per month. Your Sun sign describes the essential nature of who you are: the character that asserts itself regardless of circumstance, the self you cannot help but be.
The Moon's sign is where the Moon was at the moment of your birth. It moves through all twelve signs in roughly a month, spending two to three days in each. Because it moves quickly, the time of your birth matters — a morning and an evening birth can fall in different signs. The Moon describes how you feel: the interior life that runs beneath the public self.
The Rising sign is the degree of the zodiac that was crossing the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It completes a full rotation every twenty-four hours, which is why an accurate birth time and birthplace are required to compute it — and why Ephemera omits it rather than invents one when the time is unknown. The Rising describes how you arrive: the quality of your presence before anyone knows anything else about you.
Placidus: where in your life each planet falls.
A birth chart has two layers. The first is the zodiac — twelve signs, the same for everyone on a given day, describing the nature of each planetary placement. The second is the house system — twelve divisions of the sky mapped to twelve areas of life: identity, money, communication, home, creativity, relationships, and more. Where the zodiac describes what a placement is, the houses describe where in your life it operates.
Ephemera uses Placidus, the most widely used house system in modern Western astrology. Placidus is built on the actual sky at your birth moment: the four angular points — Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and IC — are the real horizon and meridian for your birthplace, and the eight intermediate house cusps follow from the time each degree of the ecliptic takes to travel between those axes. Every set of twelve Placidus houses is specific to an exact birth time and place.
House placements are available through the paid deeper readings — natal, career, love, and friendship. They are computed once per reading and cached, so every deeper reading draws from the same twelve positions.
Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn — and the angles between them.
Sun, Moon, and Rising are three points in a much larger chart. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn each hold their own position in the zodiac at the moment of your birth, and Ephemera computes them the same way it computes everything else — real orbital mechanics for that exact day, not a lookup table keyed to your birth month.
A chart isn't only where each planet sits — it's how they stand in relation to one another. Ephemera calculates the actual angular distance between every pair of planets and identifies the aspects that fall out of it: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition — each one found by degree, not guessed at from which signs two planets happen to share.
Right now, this shows up in two places: Saturn's placement informs the Career reading's section on where you build and where discipline lives, and the angular relationships between your planets inform the Natal reading's dominant-aspects section. Real geometry behind the read, not an inference dressed up as one.
